In 2017, Direct Line partnered with technology companies, transport experts, phycologists and city councils to pioneer a new, dynamic pedestrian crossing that responds to potential danger and hazards in real-time, to help prevent more accidents from happening, rather than just cover them when they do.
On the 5th October installed the worlds first responsive road in a controlled studio environment in London, to put our prototype to the test. A series of real-life scenarios were acted out on the road, using real people and vehicles.
Following the launch, Direct Line will continue to work with local authorities and transport agencies across the UK to find more ways The Smart Crossing could help make our urban environments safer in the real world.

Rumble strips are a road safety feature that alerts drivers when they are drifting from their lane due to distracted or inattentive driving. They are grooves in the roadway surface that produce noise and vibration when driven upon. This video shows how rumble strips are a proven and cost-effective method of reducing crashes on Minnesota roads. It also acknowledges the impacts to cyclists, recognizes the noise impacts to nearby residents, and describes the difference between rumble strips and rumble stripes.

We believe that smart ideas can turn the city into a better place. Like a dancing traffic light manikin that makes people wait and watch rather than walk through the red light. FOR more safety. #WhatAreYouFOR
